Cairo, New York, is not the Catskills’ culinary capital. It just happens to have a ridiculous number of places that cook like it.

The coffee at Red Star Cafe & Bakery is strong enough to power a decision, and the duck at Julia's Local will make you forget your own address. This list runs from fiery Nashville chicken burgers to a dog-friendly brewery with elevated bar food, all within a town that still feels like a secret.

I have eaten the evidence. Consider this your permission slip.

Best coffee in Cairo
Fresh, creative drink selection
Delicious banana bread
Cozy, artistic atmosphere
Independent, intentional business

I wandered into Red Star Cafe & Bakery expecting a decent cup of coffee. I left questioning why I ever settle for less. The best coffee in Cairo, and I say that with the full authority of someone who has suffered through far too many burnt espressos. Their drink menu is genuinely creative, and the banana bread is dangerously good. The atmosphere is cozy and artistic, the kind of place where you might accidentally write a novel. It is independent, intentional, and clearly run by people who care. I did not want to leave. That is the highest compliment I can offer.

Julia's Local is the rare restaurant that makes you feel like a regular even on your first visit. The bar is warm, welcoming, and the kind of place where the bartender remembers your name. But let us talk about the duck. Perfectly cooked, rich with flavor, and worth the trip alone. The trout is exceptional, and the lemon curd cake shines like a small miracle on a plate. I had a memorable conversation with Julia herself, which felt less like service and more like hospitality. This is a place built on genuine care. I will be back, and I will bring an appetite.

The G Spot LLC is not subtle, and thank God for that. This is the queer-friendly, welcoming local bar I have been searching for in Cairo. The creative cocktails are matched only by the knowledgeable owner, who clearly takes pride in every pour. Tom and Jess offered warm service that made me feel at home immediately. Karaoke nights and cabaret brunches add a playful chaos that works. The atmosphere is unpretentious, inclusive, and genuinely fun. I did not see everything, but I saw enough to know this is a place worth defending from mediocre bars everywhere.

The grounds are lovely, the service is sharp, and the execution was flawless. I did not have to worry about a single thing. That is the luxury I paid for. Worth every penny.

Rip Van Winkle Brewing Company proves that a brewery can also serve seriously good food. The menu is simple, but the execution is anything but. Large portions, cooked fresh, and served by a staff that actually seems happy to be there. The craft beer selection is excellent, and the warm, relaxed atmosphere makes it easy to stay longer than planned. Plenty of convenient parking, which is rarer than you might think in this town. I left full, happy, and slightly annoyed I had not discovered this place sooner. Try the fish and chips. You will thank me.

Casual, laid-back atmosphere
Extremely dog-friendly venue

Subversive Malting & Brewing has a name that promises a little chaos, and the food delivers on that promise with elevated flavors that do not try too hard. The vibe is casual and laid-back, the kind of place where you can show up in worn jeans and leave feeling like a regular. The most impressive part? It is extremely dog-friendly. My four-legged companion was treated like royalty while I worked through a plate of something genuinely delicious. The beer is solid, but the food is the star. This is the brewery for people who claim they only go for the beer. We all know the truth.

Brave The Flames is not for the faint of heart, and I mean that in the best possible way. Their fiery Nashville chicken burger is aggressively spicy, but the heat is balanced by a perfectly crafted lemonade that actually helps. The Taco Tuesday standouts are worth planning around, and the gourmet coffee is an unexpected delight. The staff offered friendly local guidance that made the experience feel personal. I take back every bad thing I have ever said about chicken sandwiches. This is a place that knows exactly what it does, and what it does is burn your face off deliciously.

Angel's is the kind of diner that makes you believe in the power of a good breakfast. The service earns a standing ovation, and I do not say that lightly. The place is spotless, family-run, and exudes a heartfelt atmosphere that is increasingly hard to find. Classic diner food done well, with an old-school interior that is nostalgic without trying too hard. Breakfast and lunch run smoothly, which is no small feat. I ordered eggs, hash browns, and a side of warm hospitality. The coffee kept coming. That is the dream. I left with a full stomach and a stupid grin.

Barbacoa worth returning for
Expertly crafted cocktails

Every dish impressed
Sweet tamale first

Casa Susanna is the kind of restaurant that makes you reconsider your usual go-to spots. The barbacoa is worth returning for, and I do not say that lightly. Every dish impressed me, from the first bite to the last. The sweet tamale arrives first, setting a dangerous precedent. The cocktails are expertly crafted, the interior is beautiful, and the staff is welcoming without being cloying. I sat at the bar, watched the bartender work, and thought, this is exactly why I love eating out. No fireworks, no theatrics, just excellent food served with confidence. I will dream about that barbacoa.

No Boundaries Estate

No Boundaries Estate

Expansive private trails and river
Ideal for large multi-generational groups
Exceptionally well-equipped, spacious home
Hot tub, games, and cozy fireplaces

No Boundaries Estate is not a restaurant, but I am including it because it deserves a mention in any guide to Cairo worth its salt. This sprawling property offers expansive private trails and a river that makes you forget you are in New York at all. It is ideal for large multi-generational groups, which is exactly the kind of chaos that usually stresses me out. The home is exceptionally well-equipped and spacious, with a hot tub, games, and cozy fireplaces. I did not want to leave. The staff made everything easy. This is the rare kind of getaway that actually delivers on its promises. Book it before they come to their senses.

Yummy Kitchen at the Cannonball Factory is proof that good food does not have to cost a fortune. High-quality ingredients, balanced ramen, and real Thai tea that does not taste like powdered regret. They offer vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options that actually taste like food, not punishment. The atmosphere is fun and productive somehow, the kind of place where you can bring a laptop or a good conversation. The staff is welcoming, and the prices are low enough that I felt guilty leaving a tip. This is a spot I plan to return to with a list of excuses. Do not sleep on this place.

A Tiny House Resort

A Tiny House Resort
Highlights
Dog-friendly fenced porches
Pool with creek views
Cozy lawn movie nights
Fun craft room activities

A Tiny House Resort is exactly what it sounds like, but do not let the size fool you. The dog-friendly fenced porches are a genius touch, and the pool with creek views is the kind of thing you did not know you needed. Cozy lawn movie nights add a nostalgic charm that is hard to resist. The craft room activities kept me entertained for far longer than I expected. This is the rare vacation rental that understands the balance between comfort and novelty. I brought my dog, my book, and a terrible attitude, and I left with all three improved. Bring your own s'mores. You will thank me.
